Notes on approval
In order to gain admission to the doctoral programme in law, it is necessary to go through a qualitative admission procedure before a committee. Information on the required steps can be found summarised on this page.
Application deadline for the winter semester 2024/25:
- Ordinary application deadline: 01.08.2024 to 30. 09.2024
- Extraordinary application period: 01.07.2024 to 31.07.2024 and 01.10.2024 to 15.11.2024
Please note: uring the extraordinary application period, the documents are checked according to available time resources - therefore it cannot be guaranteed that a decision can be made by the committee within 8 weeks or that the decision will be made in time before the end of the enrolment period.
Before submitting an application, please contact a lecturer at the faculty to arrange supervision and a topic. The application cannot be processed without a signed supervision agreement; enrolment is then not possible!
- Recent passport-style photograph (meeting passport photo requirements)
- Passport or identity card
- E-card (for all Austrians: please include a copy)
- Application form: Application for admission to the doctoral programme and admission to the doctoral school
- Academic curriculum vitae
- Proof (degree certificates) of completed previous studies/research or study specialisations, any other academic achievements and the required language skills - foreign documents must be translated and duly notarised (exception for translation: German and English documents)
-Information on notarization - Exposé of the dissertation project of at least 15,000 to max. 30,000 characters including spaces (topic and aim of the work, research questions, methodology, classification of the planned work within the current state of research)
- Letter of motivation including timetable
- Signed supervision agreement
The application for admission to a doctoral programme is made in UNIGRAZonline.
Applicants with an active UNIGRAZonline account can submit their application directly via their personal homepage in UNIGRAZonline under "My applications".
Applicants who are applying to study at the University of Graz for the first time must first create a basic account. You can then use the basic account to create an application for your degree programme.
ATTENTION: Once the application process is started, the progress made in the online application tool cannot be saved temporarily.
The selection committee consists of three persons:
- The responsible (Vice) Dean of Studies
- The head of the doctoral school
- The supervisor

- Extraordinary application deadline: 01.07.2024 to 15.11.2024
Please note: During the extraordinary application period, the documents are checked according to available time resources - therefore it cannot be guaranteed that a decision can be made by the committee within 8 weeks or that the decision will be made in good time before the end of the enrolment period.
- Once the application documents have been submitted in full, the selection committee must submit its recommendation regarding admission to the Rectorate without undue delay, but within two months at the latest.
- Enrolment deadline
- The enrolment period for courses ends in mid-September or mid-February.
- Courses start at the beginning of October or the beginning of March
- You will receive your letter of admission by e-mail.
- The Admissions Office will inform you about the further enrolment procedure.
- After enrolment you will receive access to UNIGRAZonline and you can register for courses.
