The Rwandan genocide marked the tragic culmination of years of civil war in Rwanda. In the aftermath of national and international outrage, nationally owned processes promoted societal reconciliation and sustainable peace. Among other things, the task of disarming, demobilising and reintegrating militias was crucial in Rwanda. DDR programmes can be cornerstones of peacebuilding. Charles Barisa has been extensively involved in these initiatives and will talk about their challenges and opportunities.
