I am Maria João Pereira de Melo, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Law and Political Science of Universidade Lusófona - Centro Universitário do Porto. I am also an Associate Researcher at CEAD - Francisco Suárez Center for Advanced Studies in Law, at the Faculty of Law of Universidade Lusófona. Currently, I am pursuing a PhD in Law at the same institution. My academic journey includes a Master’s degree in Law from Universidade Católica Portuguesa and a Bachelor’s degree in Law from Universidade do Minho.
I chose to come to Graz because of its outstanding reputation in the field of international law and its world-leading scholars, particularly in my research area: the possibility of recognizing a right to democracy. Graz provides a stimulating academic environment, where intellectual exchange flourishes, and where groundbreaking discussions on the evolution of international law take place. Beyond the academic excellence, the city itself is an inspiring blend of history and innovation, offering an ideal setting for reflection and research. I look forward to engaging with the academic community here, exchanging ideas, and contributing to the vibrant intellectual landscape that makes Graz such a unique place to study.
