Leopoldine Schmidt Circle
Leopoldine Schmidt was the first at the University of Graz: on July 14, 1923, the 25-year-old received her doctorate in law. While the majority of law students today are women, 100 years ago there were only a handful. The path for women to enter law faculties was a long one: it would take 19 years from the first application in 1900 before women were allowed to study law - in contrast, female students were admitted to the faculties of philosophy from 1897 and to the medical faculties from 1900.

Ota Weinberger Circle
The National Socialists persecuted him as a Jew, the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia wanted to prevent him from advancing. Nevertheless, the democrat Ota Weinberger, who survived four years in a concentration camp, became a professor of law - and an outstanding member of our university. He headed the Institute for Philosophy of Law at our faculty from 1972 to 1989 and was elected a member of the Academia Europaea in 1994.

Walter Wilburg Circle
And it does move! Walter Wilburg's "movable system", which is used in the assessment of contractual and tortious liability, serves to weigh overlapping and conflicting legal principles and then apply them accordingly. The eminent civil law lecturer was a full professor at our faculty from 1945, then Dean of REWI Uni Graz a total of seven times and also Rector of our university. He often held his fascinating lectures only based on a few lines scribbled on a tiny piece of memo paper, and his appreciative approach towards everyone stuck in the memory of his collagues and students. Numerous honorary doctorates and distinctions testify to his high reputation in German-speaking jurisprudence.
