(c) Uni Graz

English version below!

A Focus on Legal Approximation and Minority Rights in Georgia

The Center for Eastern European Law and Eurasian Studies (CEELES) of the Law Faculty recently (28 November 2024) hosted a distinguished panel discussion on “Legal Approximation and Minority Rights in Georgia.” The event was launched with cordial welcome addresses by Dean Gabriele Schmölzer and Benedikt Harzl, Deputy Director of the CEELES.

The centerpiece of the event featured insightful presentations by our invited experts, Irine Kurdadze and David Pataraia from the Tbilisi State University (TSU), who provided a compelling overview of the diverse legal and societal challenges that occur in this field. Their presentations were enriched with critical and analytical commentary by former Dean Joseph Marko and Emma Lantschner (Center for Southeast European Studies), who broadened the discussion with perspectives on European and minority rights frameworks and, not least, by problematizing the comparative aspect. The panel was moderated by Jürgen Pirker, Department of Global Governance at the Institute of Foundations of Law.

The event attracted significant attention and enthusiastic participation, particularly from the many students in attendance. It marked another milestone in the mutually fruitful collaboration between the University of Graz and Tbilisi State University, emphasizing the growing importance of this partnership for international academic exchange.
