Austrian Standards Senior Fellow from Greece

We are pleased to welcome our first Austrian Standards Senior Fellow Elena Tzoulia in Graz!

Tzoulia will spend 3.5 months at the Faculty of Law researching "Artificial Intelligence's implications for patent law". Read here what she plans to do during her research stay, what excites her about REWI Uni Graz and what she is looking forward to the most.

REWI Uni Graz: What will you work on during the fellowship?

Elena Tzoulia: I will work on my ongoing research project about the normative challenges posed by AI to the European patent law.

You're an expert in patent law. What are your current research questions?

I envisage to substantiate how the requirements for patenting computer implemented inventions are supposed to be met in the case of smart software and machine learning models, as well as to explore the interplay between patent and competition law in the case of AI-generated inventions.

What makes REWI Uni Graz particularly interesting for you, so that you have decided to stay in Graz?

The University of Graz is an old University with long tradition in legal studies and scientific impact which reaches far beyond the Austrian borders. Moreover, the Faculty of law aspires to conduct and host interdisciplinary research and demonstrates strong interest in IT law. These merits and objectives make REWI Uni Graz an ideal place for me to pursue my current scientific goals.

How long will you be here and what are you most looking forward to in Graz?

My Fellowship will last 3,5 months. During this stay in Graz, apart from joining a network of renowned scholars and taking advantage of the University facilities and resources, I expect to experience the lifestyle of this beautiful city and get to know the cultural heritage of Austria in general. Making new friends is always welcome.
