Inner Roots - our Valedictorian Award

Those who have studied law see the world in a particular way – they seek the normative in the unregulated, bring order to chaos and thus understand the structures and guardrails that enable the joint functioning of all parts of our society. In this way, many intellectual branches of our students ultimately become more resilient and, when presented publicly or put in writing, impress with their stringency. The prize awarded each year to the top-ranked student in our faculty must hence be just as impressive as the academic achievements of the Best of REWI award winners. Johannes Schweighofer has captured this sentiment precisely with his sculpture Inner Roots, which we were proud to present for the first time as in 2024: Deep-rooted knowledge gives rise to something radiant and elegant, whose beauty nevertheless always reveals its origins. We encounter this motif in Schweighofer's (almost) spherical castings, which are created using the lost wax process, in which the wax model of the sculpture is destroyed along with the casting mould. The conditions under which each individual work of art was created are thus lost forever – all that remains is what we see before us. The metal composition and patination are also unique for each piece. In many ways, each award is therefore one of a kind and, like its recipient, truly inimitable.
