Structured Doctoral Programmes

At the University of Graz, doctoral students are supported by a variety of activities that serve to expand and promote their education. This also includes the establishment of doctoral programmes, which, together with other measures, are intended to improve the quality of dissertation projects and lead to adequate supervision of doctoral candidates.

At the REWI University of Graz we have the following structured doctoral programmes:

Doctoral Programme in European Private Law

The Doctoral Programme in European Private Law complements work on students’ own monograph within the doctoral studies. It provides a forum in which students can present and discuss their findings and interim results. Doctoral candidates working on topics from all areas of private law are welcome to participate. Presentations on one’s own research topic also offer an opportunity to gain experience in academic speaking and to receive suggestions for the next stages of work.
At the same time, the programme strengthens networking among students, fostering more regular — and sometimes informal — exchange. The programme is further complemented by high-level events designed to open up a broader perspective on doctoral studies.
Doctoral Programme Interfaces in Business Law

Corporate law, insolvency law and financial law are among the “core areas” of (private) business law. In practice, these fields are never applied in isolation; their interactions — including in the context of legal enforcement — must always be considered together. At the same time, these areas of law, as applied in practice, differ significantly in their fundamental structures.
These basic differences in assessing situations arising from everyday business life mean that legal advice is typically provided by different specialists from the respective fields. Many clients seeking legal assistance find this difficult to understand, not least because of the associated costs.
Building on this foundation, an interdisciplinary structured doctoral programme has been established that focuses exclusively on research at the interface between these fields.
