REWI Fellowship Programme

The Faculty of Law offers Fellowships to ambitious early-stage-career researchers and senior researchers with outstanding international reputation. Fellows are given the opportunity to gain experience in an international scholarly environment and to benefit from the excellent know-how at the University of Graz while living in the “knowledge city Graz”, which provides a high quality of life and a dynamic as well as scientifically and culturally vibrant environment.

Research topics:

  • Human Rights
  • Smart Regulation
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Law & Climate Change
  • Comparative Law with a focus on Austrian law
  • Interdisciplinary research projects with a legal focus

Other topics may be equally well-suited for the fellowship, provided there is a clear and well-argued advantage to working on them at the Faculty of Law of University of Graz.

Additionally, a Land Steiermark Senior Fellowship on Law and Innovation is offered.

Research topic:

The research topic should be related to legal questions or implications of technical norms and standards. Applications focusing on current ECJ case law (such as James Elliott), the “New Legislative Framework” or BATs are particularly encouraged.

Other topics may be equally well-suited for the fellowship, provided there is a clear and well-argued advantage to working on them at the Faculty of Law of University of Graz.

Research topic:

The research topic should be related to commercial law, other topics are also well-suited for the fellowship, provided there is a clear and well-argued advantage to working on them at the Faculty of Law of the University of Graz.

Research topic:

The research topic has to be related to law and finance. Possible topics include taxation, law and economics, business law, and interdisciplinary approaches to law and finance. 

Senior Fellows (Post-Doc Researchers, Lecturers, Readers, Assistant Professors and Full Professors):

  • Exceptional achievements in their field and an internationally recognised reputation
  • Excellent German or English language skills

Junior Fellows (either PhD candidates working on a dissertation in the field of law, or young practitioners with at least two years of practical experience after obtaining their law degrees):

  • LL.B (first-class honours), LL.M, or equivalent law degree
  • Either currently working on a PhD thesis in the field of law or at least two years of professional experience
  • Excellent German or English language skills.

Additionally a Dean’s Fellowship is offered. This can be either a Senior Fellowship or a Junior Fellowship. The Deans Fellow may only enter into the fellowship programme upon invitation by the Dean of the Faculty of Law.

The duration of the fellowships is between 2 and 6 months. The Dean’s Fellowship can last up to one year.

Senior Fellows will be provided with their own working space in an office; Junior Fellows will be provided with a working space in the library.

Senior Fellows receive 1,500 €, Junior Fellows 1,200 €. Additionally, travel expenses to and from Graz may be covered.
